How to Lose a Designer in 10 Days

Before we begin... this is all in good fun.
Over the years, we've heard just about every question, request, and "what if" imaginable. While every project is different, there are a few comments that always make us smile because they perfectly capture the balancing act of interior design.
So, if you're looking for a humorous guide on how to lose your interior designer, here are a few phrases that might do the trick.

1. "We want the Pinterest look... but we'd like to stay under $15,000 for the whole house."
Pinterest is wonderful for inspiration, but many of those beautifully curated rooms feature custom cabinetry, bespoke furniture, designer lighting, and high-end finishes. We love recreating the feeling of those spaces, but part of our job is helping align the vision with a realistic investment.
2. "My cousin can probably build that for cheaper."
Maybe they can.
But quality craftsmanship, experience, attention to detail, and reliability all have value. We work with trusted trades because we know they'll help bring the design to life the way it was intended.
3. "Can you make it look high-end... but everything comes from discount stores?"
A beautiful home doesn't require spending a fortune on every single piece.
However, creating a luxury feel usually comes from mixing quality investment pieces with carefully selected budget-friendly finds. It's about balance—not cutting every corner.
4. "We're keeping the same budget... we just added a few more rooms."
We admire the optimism.
Adding more spaces means more furnishings, finishes, materials, and labour. Expanding the project naturally changes the investment required to complete it well.
5. "Can we make it look like a $500,000 renovation... for under $50,000?"
We love a challenge.
But while thoughtful design can dramatically transform a home, there are limits to what budgets can realistically achieve. We'd rather be honest from the beginning than promise something that isn't possible.
6. "We're hosting in two weeks, so hopefully the whole house is finished by then."
If only furniture, custom upholstery, millwork, lighting, and contractors all worked on overnight shipping.
Great design takes planning, coordination, and patience—and the finished result is worth the wait.
7. "We trust your expertise... but could we also see another 15 options?"
We completely understand wanting confidence in your decisions.
That's why we carefully curate selections instead of overwhelming you with endless possibilities. Our recommendations are intentional, helping make the process enjoyable rather than exhausting.
8. "We want it to feel completely custom... but exactly like this Pinterest photo."
Inspiration is a great starting point.
Our goal is never to copy someone else's home but to create a space that reflects your lifestyle while incorporating the elements you love most.
9. "We thought walls were more flexible after they were framed."
Unfortunately... they tend to become much less flexible.
That's why thoughtful planning before construction begins is one of the most valuable parts of the design process. Making decisions early saves time, money, and plenty of headaches later.
10. "Do we really need the designer trade options if we can just Google it?"
Google is a fantastic tool.
What it can't provide is years of experience, access to exclusive trade resources, knowledge of product quality, professional relationships, or a carefully curated design plan that ensures everything works together beautifully.
